Objectives

Examine importance of producing syngas from petcoke, asphaltenes and coal to reduce or eliminate high operating costs associated with converting bitumen into synthetic crude oil.

Identify best, most environmentally sound gasification technology for Alberta coals to develop a competitive natural-gas alternative in bitumen upgrading and refining as well as a chemical feedstock.

Explore the need to increase Alberta's bitumen upgrading capacity and to add a refinery at the upgrader site to process synthetic crude oil into a premium crude or petroleum products.

Update progress of integrating and operating Lurgi multi-purpose gasification unit in the development of North West Upgrading's independent, heavy-oil upgrader project.
Discuss CO2 recovery in the bitumen upgrading process and the latest concepts for sequestration when planning, engineering and building gasification units in oilsands upgrader projects.
Find out why gasification of coal, oilsands residue and petroleum coke holds the greatest promise as an alternative hydrogen source in the amounts required in the upgrader projects.
Examine how oilsands plants are also an abundant source of petrochemical feedstocks, potentially capable of supporting new world-scale plants producing olefins, aromatics and derivatives.
Study examples of gasification and cogeneration and how oilsands and upgrader projects can be planned to integrate these concepts using syngas to fuel process and cogen plants.
